Root Cellar

Today’s economy has some of our clients thinking back to the days when people grew their own vegetables and fruit and preserved them during the winter months. The McKernon Group has studied the concept behind this type of storage and has built one for a client in the crawl space area off of the full basement of their home.

Although it has some of the key aspects of our ancestor’s root cellars, it also has some modern day touches to help control the temperature and humidity. The room is roughly 9' x 9' and walls are constructed of concrete blocks with 3” of urethane spray foam on the exterior that is exposed to the warm air of the crawl space. Also installed in the root cellar are some modern exterior strip lighting and a water spigot to add moisture to the dirt floor when needed. Lined with shelves, it is easy to accommodate the variety of foods that require different temperatures and humidity to maintain freshness. McKernon also installed a remote sensor for the temperature and humidity to be displayed upstairs in the living area of the home so the owners have no problem moderating the conditions inside the root cellar at all times.
